James Cameron's AVATAR komt naar Animal Kingdom

Zojuist is tijdens een persconferentie georganiseerd door Walt Disney Imagineering in Glendale bekend gemaakt dat Disney de themaparkrechten heeft aangekocht voor James Cameron's ruimte-epos AVATAR, de 3D-blockbuster uit 2009. Met deze aankoop mag Disney officieel de karakters en omgevingen van de film inzetten om attracties en themagebieden mee te ontwikkelen.
Als eerste locatie heeft Disney hun dierenpark in Florida in gedachte: Animal Kingdom. Hier zal een themagebied komen welke geheel gewijd zal zijn aan de thuisplaneet van de Na'vi; Pandora. De exotische jungles die spectaculair in IMAX 3D te zien waren in de film, zullen vertaald worden naar een nieuw gebied in het park; waarschijnlijk op/rond de huidige locatie van Camp Minnie-Mickey, waar ooit het fantasiethemagebied Beastly Kingdomme gepland stond.
Het mag duidelijk zijn dat deze aankondiging een antwoord is op het succes van de concurrentie; Universal's Islands of Adventure heeft met de opening van The Wizarding World of Harry Potter vorig jaar enorm veel extra bezoekers binnengehaald. Disney hoopt natuurlijk met AVATAR hetzelfde te kunnen doen.
Het is nog niet officieel aangekondigd wat het nieuwe gebied precies in zal gaan houden; maar de kans is groot dat er tenminste één grote E-ticket attractie geopend zal worden, plus nog enkele kleintjes. Het budget wordt gelijk geschat aan het budget voor Cars Land in Disney California Adventure; zo'n $200 miljoen.
AVATAR was overigens pas het eerste deel in de trilogie die James Cameron voor ogen heeft; deel twee en drie worden momenteel geproduceerd. Men hoopt op net zo'n succes als bij deel één, maar dat zal nog moeten blijken; hopelijk heeft Disney geen kat in de zak gekocht...!

At a press conference happening right now at Walt Disney Imagineering, Bob Iger and Tom Staggs just announced a long-term creative partnership with James Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment and Fox Filmed Entertainment to bring the fantasy world of AVATAR to life at Disney Parks. And it’ll all begin at Disney’s Animal Kingdom at Walt Disney World Resort.
James and his producing partner Jon Landau and their team at Lightstorm Entertainment will serve as creative consultants on the project and will work side-by-side with our Walt Disney Imagineers as we dream up experiences that will take our guests deep into worlds of AVATAR like never before. There are also two sequels to the record setting first film in the works, which will offer more fascinating stories, characters and locations to explore in the AVATAR universe. Disney’s Animal Kingdom at Walt Disney World Resort is planned as the site of the first AVATAR-themed land with construction expected to begin by 2013.
We believe Disney’s Animal Kingdom is a great fit for this project because it was created to give guests the opportunity to experience the worlds of animals and nature – real and mythical – in new ways. Disney’s Animal Kingdom also celebrates adventure, living in harmony with nature and environmental stewardship – themes that are deeply rooted in the story of AVATAR.
